SUGAR BEET  RESARCH   DEPARTMENT OF ISFAHAN

 

Sugar beet is grown in all the regions of Iran except in Sistan-Balouchestan, due to lack of Water and in Gilan and Mazandaran, because of the priority of other crops. Each of the sugar beet production regions has it,s peculiar cultural and climatic conditions and therefore suitable varieties have been developed for each region. There are two sugar factory  with a total capacity of 5500 tons per day and abuot 1400 ha. sugar beet was planted  in Isfahan province.  To study sugar beet production limites factors, Sugar Beet Research Department was established in 1974. This department consist of  two division, agronomy and breeding.

Objectives:   

The Agronmy division is responsible of research on the proper cultural practices for sugar as follows: 1)identificaton of sugar beet macro and micro elements requirements, 2)optimal period of irrigation, 3)indentification of suitable machines of sugar bet cultivation, 4)determation of suitable sowing methods and utilzation of precision drilling and 5) growth pattern of sugar beet in different enviromental conditions and etc.

-Plant breeding

Objectives:

  The objectives of the Plant Breeding division are to improve yield and other desired characters of sugar beet. Research activies on the following, 1)high root yield and sugar content; 2)increase sugar yield and juice purity; 3)improvement and development of multigerm and monogerm hybrid varities(triploid and tetraploid); 4)breeding for abiotic stresses such as salinity, drought. Etc 5)seed quality according to sugar beet growers demand..
